As a manufacturer of tens of millions of micro-axles each month, Polydec SA (www. polydec.ch) is a leading supplier to the global automotive industry. The micro-axles of hardened steel are essential parts of the step motors in car electronics. This complex automotive supplier relies on high-end technology and rigorous quality assurance. Polydec implements all manufacturing steps in its own facilities in a certified workflow. An integrated image processing system now supports the manufacturing by machine vision. Ryf AG (www.ryfag.ch) from Grenchen/Switzerland has developed a customer-specific solution with Kappa cameras, the application-specific image processing software Kappa Xero, telecentric lenses and illumination as well as a complex 8-station rotary table system. 5 FireWire cameras, partially in multi-camera operation, assure a 100 % QA of the micro-axles. The integrated image processing software Kappa Xero is based on the image processing tool Halcon. It is the interface to the SPS-controlled machine, which uses the Xero image analysis data to sort only the flawless parts into the charges. The installation needs less than a second to check five workpieces simultaneously. The micrometer-scale defined product parameters are length, diameter, surface, radius of the bevels, and rotation symmetry of the whole micro axis (bending). Machine vision system for “Polydec“.
